Hurricane Poster Project - Curt Pachunka

Description - Screen Printed Poster

••• Hurricane Poster Project: A design firm out of boulder Colorado called Moxie Sozo had asked me and Karen (as well as other designers nationwide) to do a poster about Hurricane Katrina. The posters will be sold online with all proceeds going to charity. So knowing that everyone else will probably be making a highly political poster about bush and how he botched up the rescue efforts, we decided to pay tribute to the working class people of New Orleans, the ones that were in the muck and the ones that have to face up to the challenge of rebuilding there beloved city. It is a screen printed poster, with a run of 100 total, all signed and numbered. Hopefully it will help raise some money.

Description - Poster

••• This was a poster that I really wanted to get into abstract ideas and approach it from a minimalist standpoint. The grid structure/size of poster/abstract shapes are all based from the golden mean. I'm really intrigued with grid structures and how you can start with something as structured as the golden mean but how you can teach yourself to break from the grid and create more playful elements, yet there all proportional to the whole, and they all play a part in achieving the desired aesthetic solution.

Description - Poster

••• This was designed to work as three separate posters that can all work individually or together. This project came about shortly after September eleventh while I was in college. It really is about my idea of how we view each other as people. The ambiguity of it is that when you look at the faces, you can't tell how old they are, or if they are of irish, german, or polish heritage. It doesn't matter. You just see another human being for what they are. But if you would color the pictures according to the numbers, the background lines become red stripes and the people turn into solid shapes. So instead of viewing them as just people, you now see them as Americans. So depending on who is looking at it, they bring their own baggage to it. I've always been fascinated with the viewer's interpretation of the work as much as the work itself.

The Great Unifyer - Curt Pachunka

Description - Book Spreads

••• These two spreads were taken from an experimental book that I did on American culture. The book focused on showing metaphors that I used visually and without text. The viewer then was forced to bring their own interpretations on the images presented to them.
1. "The Great Unifier" was an experiment on the idea of how a hat can be culture specific but it has the same purpose in all instances. The culture puts its own values and traditions into it, but the purpose of it remains the same. To cover and protect.
2. "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" was a spread about the fear that Americans felt about flying after September eleventh. I juxtaposed the images with the childrens prayer "now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the lord my soul to keep, if I die before I wake, I pray the lord my soul to take." I was kind of hinting on the fact that for a lot of people religion only becomes important in a near death or frightful experience.
